Demi Moore

Is there possibly a more overpaid, over-rated person on the planet than Demi (is it DEH-mee or duh-MEE, every other time I hear it it's different) Moore -- beside Jim Carrey that is? The airwaves are rapidly filling with images of her shaved skull saying brave and moving things as a prelude to 'G.I. Jane' (which is a nickname not applied to sailors, which is what NAVY Seals are). Here's a list of things that put some doubt on this film for me -- this film had 4 other titles before choosing this one (actually Navy Cross might have been a good one, but we'll never know) -- the stubble look didn't work for Sigourney Weaver in Alien III, what makes Demi think it'll work for her -- there's not supposed to be any gratuitous nudity in it -- and her track record just isn't that great. There are at least 4 films that were all but centered on her -- Striptease, The Jurror, The Scarlet Letter, and The Butcher's Wife. None of these films lived up to their expectations, and I suspect the only reason Striptease did as well as it did was because of -- you guessed it, the gratuitous nudity. Even The Hunchback of Notre Dame flopped (at least as much as a Disney Flick can flop). But she's been in such big hits, there must be something to her. Well, let's look at those hits....

Ghost
This was not a Demi Moore film, this was a Patrick Swayze film. He was still riding high from Dirty Dancing and Roadhouse, they could have cast Jennifer Grey in her part and the film would have done as well. Besides that, Whoopi Goldberg stole it out from beneath both of them -- remember who got the Oscar for that film....

A Few Good Men
Again, not a Demi Moore film, but a Tom Cruise film with Jack Nicholson doing the scene stealing honors -- Penelope Ann Miller could have done this film.

Indecent Proposal
You don't suppose Robert Redford could have had anything to do with this one, do you? Or the prospect of gratuitous nudity?

Disclosure
see the previous example, and substitute in Michael Douglas. Of course, I don't recall this film doing all that well anyway, maybe they should have used Sharon Stone.

So, do I not like Demi Moore -- don't be silly. She is a competent actress when she wants to be, and she does work well with others. She was good in most of the movies mentioned above, as long as a part doesn't have to get too deep. Mortal Thoughts, Now and Then, About Last Night, and St. Elmo's Fire had her in appropriately shallow roles, and she did very well. But let's face it, anyone who was in Nothing But Trouble has no business demanding >$12,000,000 for a movie.
