This week's tirade:

Elian Again...

Although hopefully, quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore'.

Finally, after an interminably long time, poor little Elian and his family have gone home. Will the be better off in Cuba than here? I think it's a good bet they're better off in Cuba than in Miami -- California might have been ok for them, but definately not Miami. So they're back to Cuba and what will hopefully become a quiet, normal life again -- Yes, I know, Castro will undoubtedly parade little Elian around as his victory over the opressive country to his north, but given Juan Miguel's reluctance to parade him around in our country, I don't think he'll let it go too long down there either. This whole thing should never have gotten this out of hand in the first place -- but the Miami relatives, and certain news networks took every oppurtunity to politicize a situation that was never political. I said it before -- Elian was kidnapped by his mother, placed in a life threatening situation, and then made the object of a media circus. If this child had been Soviet, Red Chinese, or any other communist or dictatorial country you wish to name, he would have been reunited with his family as soon as possible -- We're supposed to be the good guys, we aren't supposed to use petty political bickering to keep families split up. And although Fox News network put every Anti-Castro, Pro-Miami 'expert' they could round up on the air to demonize Elian's father for wanting to take him home -- public opinion never went that way. And for a change, the politicians listened to the will of the American people, instead of the money changers, and reunited a family that should have been reunited months ago.

Now, having said that, let me add this little disclaimer...

I'm sure the cast majority of Miami Cubans are perfectly nice and friendly folks, who had thier own personal, and very good reasons for leaving Cuba and moving to the U.S. And maybe Elian's mom thought she did too, but she didn't have the right to take him with her -- according to Cuban and American laws. But Elian's father is perfectly happy living in Cuba -- maybe he's a political big wig, maybe he's just found his place in the world. But just because some people don't like it there, does not mean everyone doesn't like it there -- and you can't force your personal or political views on someone else in this country.

Even if they did that to you in Cuba.
