The weekend's over...
So we had another fabulous breakfast, loaded up the car, and started toward home and our last point of interest, Fantastic Caverns.
We finally found the place (it was well off the beaten path), got our tickets and waited for our turn. We loaded up and the first stop before we went into the cave was here, and the original steam powered generator for the cave's lighting systems.
Ok, just remember that Stalactites hang from the ceiling and Stalagmites come up from the ground. Formations like these start out as...
...little formations called soda straws. Of course, it takes thousands and thousands of years to do that.
This is what happens when your neighbor drills for water and hits your cave. They decided it would be best for the cave to continue on down past the cave, then seal up around it. There is still water seeping in around the pipe, creating these formations which they can acurately date to over 60 years ago.
You don't walk through Fantastic Caverns, your ride through it. Each tour has 2 Jeeps, each pulling a trailer full of tourists. They run on propane instead of gas, so there isn't any poisonous fumes produced (of course, for folks trying to reduce thier CO2 footprint, this isn't the tour to take).
This is where my new camera really shines. This picture was taken without the flash, using only the cave lighting. Image stabilization is a wonderful thing...
The dark spot in the middle is the original entrance to the cave -- the 2 larger vehicle sized holes were dug out later. There are a few spots where everyone has to duck, but on the whole it's a neat way to tour a cave.
Except for Alex who finally got really bored.
So we headed back to the car, found our way back to the interstate and headed home. When we neared St Louis -- remembering the mess going around town -- we headed straight through, and saved about an hour from the trip down. We did more in 3 days than we did the week we came last year, and still got home before dark. What more could you want?
